I hold my peace
I wanted to serve you a little helping from the stew
brewing in the political pot, of late. I wanted to speak first about the ‘show’
we were witness to during mid-June Rajya Sabha (the esteemed Upper House, mind
you) elections for a handful of seats. I wanted to show you too the interplay
of emotions on my grizzled face as I watched the tragi-comic dance-drama that
was being enacted on the Maharashtra theater with side shows at Guwahati and
Goa: a tear in the eye, blush of shame on the face, a frown on my already furrowed
brow and a wry smile on my lips. Also, as well, I wanted to ask the much too
wiser and more enlightened readers of my blogs about what went on in their own heads
and hearts over the unfolding panorama of all the recent political events. In
addition, I wanted to have a decent little tete-a-tete regarding country’s onward
march towards “Mission: Vishwaguru” with my dear reader-friends …
But, but …
In a routine, haal-chaal sharing conversation with my
dear one on phone just a couple of days back when I spoke about the likely blog
topic for the week, I was advised discretion. When I laughed it off, I was
served some hard facts and figures to supplement the well-meant advice. At once
my valour vaporized and my middle-class fears came to the fore snuffing out the
candle of all my writing josh. The putting-thought-into-word wrestling bout my
grey cells were buzzing with came to a grinding halt. I was once again back into
the suraksha kavach of my status-quoist shell of anonymity– the door firmly
slammed shut, name plate removed. Having read Julio Ribeiro’s op-ed piece on
Friday morning (the day I finalize my blog before its posting on the coming morrow
of Saturday) in the snug safety of my cocoon, I thanked my dear well-wisher for
the sound advice. Wasting no time I took up my mobile and got busy promoting ‘national
interest’ at a frenzied pace like all the rest. With time on my hands I shall
quickly learn how to play and blow the trumpet as well.
So, sorry folks.
While wishing my beloved country and countrymen resounding glory, I utter no
further word and hold my peace. Silence, they say, is golden. It sure is. Don’t
we all know it?
